Standard 6 - Engage in professional learning
6.3: Engage with colleagues and improve practice
Seek and apply constructive feedback from supervisors and teachers to improve teaching practices.
Throughout my placement, within the classroom and in the school playground, I demonstrated respect and appreciation when receiving feedback on performance and suggestions from colleagues on what could be done differently in the future, consistent with the codes of ethics and conduct for teaching professionals (Link to focus area 7.1). I acted promptly to apply these suggestions, along with areas of improvement identified through placement reports and self-reflection. My Supervising teacher’s feedback in relation to content, teaching strategies and student management were taken into account when planning future learning experiences, to enhance student engagement and learning.

Mid-placement Supervising teacher's feedback and action plan - After discussing and reflecting on my progress towards achieving the Australian Professional Standards in my mid-placement review, I compiled a table which identified areas of opportunity for me to demonstrate my developing skills, with application to future teaching and learning. Comments from my Supervising teacher and focus areas were addressed in the remaining weeks of my placement.
Final placement report section comments for Standard 6 - Evidence of my interest and willingness to engage in professional learning and development.

6.4 Apply professional learning and improve student learning
Demonstrate an understanding of the rationale for continued professional learning and the implications for improved student learning.
The Professional placement experience provided the opportunity to identify professional learning areas to develop and set corresponding short-term goals (Link to focus area 6.1). Throughout the six-week period, I critically analysed my teaching and learning progression. Consultation with my Supervising teacher provided clarity regarding the extent to which I had achieved these goals, with discussions relating to sources of professional learning for personal growth and teaching development (Link to focus area 6.2). I liaised with colleagues to set personal long-term goals to improve teaching practices and long-term performance, with the intention of supporting my future learners in the best way possible.
Link to 7.4: Engage with professional teaching networks and broader communities
Understand the role of external professionals and community representatives in broadening teachers’ professional knowledge and practice.
Advice and collaboration with learning and support staff was required to ensure the integration of learning outcomes, alignment of teaching and learning strategies designed to meet the student’s specific learning needs, and communications regarding the student’s progress with parents were consistent. This involvement increased my awareness of appropriate professional organisations designed to contribute to teachers’ professional development and the support of all students to achieve success within the classroom ( Link to focus area 1.6).
